LIVERSEDGE F.C. 2 v 1 SILSDEN A.F.C. Walton 4, Jackson 90. Sorhaindo 35. Att. 205

COBBYDALERS SUNK AGAIN IN THE DYING MINUTE

The Cobbydalers conceded another late goal to extend their winless run to six. It was another spirited performance by the Silsden outfit and the result was in doubt until the final whistle. Sedge’s win took them up to 2nd place in the NCEL Premier Division table.

Silsden were on the back foot at the start with Josh Kaine only clearing Sedge’s first attack to Oliver Fearon who shot wide. The next attack ended with the opener for Joe WALTON after Joe Kenny had crossed the ball from the right and Oliver Fearon setting up the scorer.

Silsden were rattled. Jake Thompson broke past Mark Everingham before crossing to Fearon who flicked the ball to the far post. Ben Higginson tipped the ball for a corner. High balls were the main threat with the throw-ins of Liam Marsden a real test. Thomson wasted a free kick from the edge of the Silsden penalty area.

Silsden gradually settled and Lawrence Sorhaindo linked well with Jake Taylor-Mountford before bringing a fine save from Josh Lill in the Sedge goal. Arley Barnes then headed over the bar after good work by Taylor-Mountford.

Liversedge were looking for a second with Thomson proving a threat down the right. Kaine cleared off the line before Ben Higginson made a magnificent save to deny Fearon, who had weaved his way through the Reds’ defence. Thomson had a shot deflected for a corner which Walton headed over the bar.

Higginson was caught out by Thomson but Kaine cleared off the line before the Silsden keeper made a magnificent save to deny Fearon. Jay Benn was caught out of position allowing Kenny to slip through. Dan Illingworth blocked Kenny’s shot.

Silsden’s resolve built up confidence and a pacey run by Benn up the right ended with SORHAINDO slotting in the full-back’s perfect cross. Walton fired over at the other end before Benn and Sorhaindo exchanged passes when the latter saw a shot blocked. Taylor-Mountford then sped up the left. Two shots on target were blocked before the winger’s third effort was marginally too high. Patient build up led to a chance for Sorhaindo but his low shot lacked venom.

The final ten minutes had lifted the Cobbydalers, who began to dominate possession at the start of the second half. Joe Mitchell had an effort blocked before Barnes released Benn up the right. Benn slid the ball across but it was cleared. Silsden continued to control the game.

For the first time this season the Silsden fans saw the use of the “sin-bin”; Liversedge’s Walton spending ten minutes in for dissent. Liversedge were reduced to spasmodic attacks, although a cross from Kenny went begging. Chris Wademan had two shots blocked before a Mitchell effort cleared the bar,

Substitutes Khurram Shazad and Aidan Kirby came on. Shazad immediately set up Kirby who fired over. Five minutes later, in a reprise, Kirby hit the side netting. A further slick passing move ended with Taylor-Mountford having a shot saved.

With ten minutes left both sides strove for the points. Josh Lill came off his line to deny Sorhaindo whilst Kaine stopped Alex Lill at the other end. Khurram curled a shot wide. His one-two, one-two with Marco Basic almost brought the decisive goal.

At the other end Kaine and Illingworth both broke up attacks. Josh Brown came on and immediately cleared off the line before a long throw-in was headed on. In a packed box Benn blocked a shot but JACKSON fired home from close range. It was a cruel blow for the Cobbydalers who had fought so hard and had played such good football.

Heads were down after the defeat to a late goal but it was clear that the Cobbydalers are beginning to adapt to the more direct football they are experiencing this season. Next week they travel to Goole.

THE WEST RIDING COUNTY CUP  ROUND ONE 2019-20

COBBYDALERS ROCKED BY EARLY GOAL IN PULSATING DERBY

The Cobbydalers made the short trip to the Silentnight Beds Stadium
for the opening round of the West Riding County Cup. The Cobbydalers
were missing Jay Benn and Jay Taylor Mountford. Chris Wademan made his
first start of the season and Liam Hudson came in at right back.
The Cobbydalers were caught out in the opening minute when left
back Jake McEneaney broke up the left and slid the ball into the middle,
where Reece BARRETT fired home the opener. Barlick almost netted a
second when Joe Noblet curled a shot just over the bar. Eventually
Silsden began to settle with Wademan looking dangerous. A corner from
Khurram Shazad was headed over by Dan Illingworth before Barlick’s James
Crorken released Joe Noblet. His shot was well saved by Ben Higginson.
Laurence Sorhaindo then twisted past his marker and broke down the
left. His cross was met by Wademan whose shot was just off target. The
game flowed from end to end with Noblet going close for the
“Lancastrians” and Shazad ending a swift counter for the Yorkshiremen
and scoring the equaliser!!!! The flag for offside denied Silsden this.
Gradually Barlick began to push the Cobbydalers back with some
slick football involving Sam Amankwaa and Reece Barrett and a mazy
dribble form Harry Thompson. Illingworth and Kaine stood firm to deny
the home side a second. As the first half was coming to an end, Marco
Basic saw a powerful shot just clear the bar, before a swift counter
ended with Noblet’s effort narrowly wide of making it two nil.
Barlick were forced to make a change early in the second half, with
Ric Sear, formerly of Squires Gate, replacing Amankwaa. Silsden had the
lion’s share of the possession but they couldn’t break down the resolute
Barlick defence. Indeed, they were indebted to Mitchell’s superb
challenge to deny the home side, as they broke down the right.
Sorhaindo had a half chance at the near post, after Basic had split
the defence with a deft flick, but his shot was wide of the mark.
Barlick countered. Kaine snuffed out the danger. The skipper then sent
Mark Everingham clear on the left. The ball was moved onto Shazad who
cut in and hit a low shot which was cleared.
Kaine then stole the ball off Seear and Silsden were on the attack
again. Basic twisted and turned before hitting a low shot. Livesey could
only parry the shot. Sorhaindo managed to win the ball and laid it back
to Barnes. His effort just cleared the bar.
Barlick were still a threat on the counter, Seear looking
particularly dangerous. Higginson denied him with a fine save. Kaine
cleared the ball. Mitchell saw a low shot saved at the Town end and then
Kaine blocked Luke Gibson’s powerful shot. Sorhaindo hit another effort
over the woodwork.
With ten minutes left Silsden threw more men forwards. Barlick
packed their penalty but were still dangerous on the counter. Barnes
denied them on one occasion but in the dying minutes Zac Dale sped down
the right and hit a  superb cross to SEEAR who volleyed home the second.
It had been a full-blooded cup-tie. Although the Cobbydalers had
lost there with many positives, with most players getting much closer to
their best. On Saturday the Reds travel to Liversedge to renew
hostilities against last Saturday’s victors. With an improvement here
and Josh Brown, Benn, Kirby and Taylor-Mountford all available, manager
Forrest  has plenty to think about in his selection.

ENTERTAINING COBBYDALERS UNDONE BY SET-PIECES

                                                      SILSDEN A.F.C. 1 v 3 LIVERSEDGE F.C.                                                                                           Basic 15.                    Raw 17, Bottomley 74, Tarangadzo 84.

Att.158.

The Cobbydalers entertained 7th placed Liversedge on Saturday, hoping to bounce back after a run of three defeats. Danny Forrest brought in new signing Marko Basic, whilst Mark Everingham came in at left back, allowing Arley Barnes to move into the midfield. Laurence Sorhaindo returned to the attack. Basic had been an apprentice for two years at Halifax Town and one year as a professional before moving to Ossett United.

Silsden started positively with Everingham breaking up the left. His first low cross was cleared back to him, his second finding Basic on the edge of the penalty area but he was quickly closed down. Everingham was involved again on fifteen minutes. This time BASIC killed the ball and, with a dip of the shoulder, created enough space to drive it home. Barnes drove another ball forward but the ball was cleared.

Two minutes after the opener, Liversedge were awarded a corner. Silsden managed to clear it but only for another corner. Oliver Fearon then set up Alfie RAW who headed home.

Silsden’s response was positive. Basic had an effort blocked before youngster Jay Benn broke down the right, his cross cleared for a corner. Benn’s next run was mesmerising, cutting past three defenders before sending over another cross, which again was headed for a corner.

Dan Illingworth then saw a shot cleared to Jake Taylor-Mountford, his effort being cleared for a corner. Shazad curled the ball in but Barnes headed wide. Benn went on another great run before Taylor-Mountford laid the ball off to Sorhaindo, who couldn’t get a clean touch on the ball.

Basic had another shot blocked before Benn went on another mazy dribble, cutting in to the near post and finally shooting into the side netting. Shazad moved in from the left but keeper Josh Lill managed to gather the ball at the second attempt. Joe Mitchell then set up Barnes. His twenty-five yard effort was fumbled by the keeper but cleared by Liam Marsden.

It had been an exhilarating twenty minutes of pressure on the visitors but without reward. In the final five minutes of the half, Liversedge managed to string some passes together. Kaine denied Joe Walton with a superb tackle, then Illingworth broke up another sortie.

Silsden were on the attack from the restart. Basic and Benn combined to create a chance before the former saw a superb volley deflected for a corner. They continued to be the main threat before Aidan Kirby came on for Sorhaindo.

Another run from Benn set up Shazad, who fired over the bar, before Illingworth denied Liversedge at the other end. A free-kick saw Shazad hit the post. Mitchell’s follow-up hit the bar!

Benn’s next run was halted by a crude challenge-a booking (one of four for the visitors).! Silsden pressed and pressed before a counter attack was halted by Kaine. The ball was moved across the back with confidence before the Cobbydalers created a golden opportunity down the right. Kaine’s through ball found Kirby. The striker broke through and, with only the keeper to beat and Shazad on his inside,  he blasted the ball just too high. It certainly hit the bar but, whether the keeper got a touch or not, it was a chance wasted. Chris Wademan, whose international clearance came through this week, came on for Taylor-Mountford, who had had another sound game.

Fifteen minutes to go. Liversedge broke down the right. The ball was crossed into the Silsden area. Substitute BOTTOMLEY’s header beat the Silsden keeper. A sucker punch. Ten minutes later Silsden failed to defend a corner and TARANGADZO headed home at the near post. Mitchell’s late effort cleared the bar.

To concede three goals from set-pieces was frustrating for the management and the fans as the Cobbydalers had dominated play.

On Tuesday Silsden are at Barnoldswick for a West Yorkshire Cup game, before engaging again with Liversedge away next Saturday in the League.

SILSDEN A.F.C. 0 v 5 YORKSHIRE AMATEURS

                         Att.105                                            Flynn 35, 76. Crawford 53, Sykes 87, Moore 90.

AMMIES PILE THE MISERY ON THE COBBYDALERS

Silsden entertained Yorkshire Amateurs on Saturday at the Cobbydale Construction Stadium hoping to get back on track after successive defeats on the road at Barton and Maltby. The “Ammies” had lost one league game to date and had been knocked out of the FA Cup at Billingham, whilst progressing in the F.A. Vase. This was always going to be a tough task for the Cobbydalers and it proved to be so. Manager Danny Forrest started in the number nine shirt and Josh Kaine returned after injury. Surprisingly, the reliable Mark Everingham was left out, Arley Barnes dropping to left back.

Kaine was soon in the action clearing a through ball before right-back, Jay Benn, slid the ball to Khurram Shazzad. He slid the ball to Aidan Kirby, whose shot was deflected for a corner. Kaine headed over. Forrest then flicked the ball to Kirby who was brought down but play went on. The Ammies then applied some pressure, Kaine denying the visitors on two occasions, bailing out Craig Bentham, who had failed to control the ball.

The visitors had their first chance on twelve minutes after Adam Field had freed Stephen Crawford. Ben Higginson saved his low shot. Silsden responded with Bentham crossing to Barnes at the far post. The ball was moved to Shazzad, who slid it to Forrest but he failed to control the pass. Kaine cleared up at the other end after Silsden had surrendered possession.

Joe Mitchell managed to get the ball back off the visitors with two tenacious tackles before sliding the ball to Kirby, who was brought down. As the ball had touched the referee a dropped-ball was the result. Steven Crawford was booked for the visitors. Fernando Moore slid a ball between Barnes and Shazad but Mitchell intercepted at the expense of a corner. Matthew Sykes’ cross found Ryan Serrant but Higginson saved his header. Forrest was replaced by new signing, Lamin Janneh.

The Cobbydalers broke forwards but were halted by a tackle, which would have resulted in a foul last season. The Cobbydalers have yet to get used to the more physical aspects of the NCEFL. A break from the Ammies own area caught Silsden out. Bentham was well off the pace as Sykes broke down the right wing. He cut inside but didn’t trust his right foot. A minute later Ashley FINN cut between Illingworth and Kaine to slide in the opener ten minutes from the break, in a classic counter-attack.          Silsden responded with a shot from Bentham from outside the penalty area. It went wide. Illingworth’s through ball just eluded Jake-Taylor Mountford before a powerful run by Benn was halted illegally by Leon Henry, who was cautioned.

Barnes and Shazzad combined well down the left on the restart but when the ball was threaded through, the defence didn’t read it. Since his earlier superb performances Shazzad has become more of a peripheral player. The same can be said about Illingworth, who was so commanding last season. A poor clearance gave Crawford the chance to free Sykes but he wasted the effort. It wasn’t long before the visitors doubled their lead. Higginson was left helpless as CRAWFORD’S thunderbolt hit the back of the net.

Silsden had played into the visitors trap. It was not rocket science and, indeed, somewhat cynical, but the Ammies were two up. “Pack the defence, throw bodies on the line and counter attack at pace.” Silsden had to attack. Barnes played a one-two with Shazzad before seeing his shot saved. The Ammies countered with Higginson managing to save Flynn’s effort with his feet.

Taylor-Mountford then found Kirby in space. His shot was saved at the near post before the ball was quickly moved to Flynn, who waltzed between Illingworth and Barnes and then shot wide of the far post. Bentham, Mitchell, and Benn exchanged passes before the former overhit his cross.

Lewis Waddington replaced Taylor-Mountford on 70 minutes. With Kaine visibly tiring after his lay-off, it might have been better to have brought off the skipper for Everingham and push Barnes into the midfield. Waddington did head a corner off the line but only to an opponent. Higginson then made a fine save to deny FLYNN but it wasn’t long before the striker left the Kaine in his wake to add a third.

Three-nil down the Cobbydalers were shell shocked. Kirby and Mitchell continued to battle hard but the defence was exposed twice more. Waddington was easily dispossessed in his opponent’s half. The ball was moved swiftly to SYKES, who left Kaine well behind, before netting the fourth. Fernando MOORE rounded Illingworth in stoppage time to make it five.

Next Saturday Silsden are at home to Handsworth 3pm.

MALTBY MAIN F.C. 3 v 0 SILSDEN A.F.C. Wilson 9, Chipps 28, Moxam 73. Att. 75.

BELOW-PAR COBBYDALERS FAIL TO TAKE CHANCES

The Cobbydalers travelled to Maltby Main on Saturday. In the reverse fixture the Cobbydalers had a home victory,2-1, against their opponents of a month ago. Main, who have only played three league games to date, losing two of them, made up for it by making progress in both the FA Cup and Vase. Leading scorer Aidan Kirby returned whilst Ben Higginson replaced the injured Alfie Darke in goal and new recruit Liam Hudson replaced Josh Brown at centre back.

Main were first on the attack but Mark Everingham read the situation and cleared the ball. William Eades then fired over the bar. Ben Aigar managed to get the better of Dan Illingworth but shot wide. When Joe Austin curled in a free kick, Anthony WILSON rose above the Silsden defence to head Maltby into the lead on nine minutes.

Silsden responded immediately. Khurram Shadzad broke up the left, cut back and slid the ball to Craig Bentham, who hit a low drive from outside the area. The effort was just off target. Robert Chipps headed over at the other end before Jay Benn broke up the right, only to see his dangerous cross cleared at the near post.

Kirby then had three chances in a five minute spell. Shazad broke up the left. His swift turn left two defenders in his wake. He fizzed a cross to Kirby, who was free in the box. Kirby volleyed over. Two minutes later Khurram released Kirby again. A dip of the shoulder gave him an opening but his effort was marginally wide of the far post. Another Shazad pass, another Kirby effort. The net bulged! The Silsden fans thought Kirby had equalised but the shot had hit the side netting! On another day it might have been three-one!

Kirby’s head didn’t drop. Unfortunately at the other end, Robert CHIPPS netted a second when Higginson allowed a low shot to slip under his outstretched hand. The Cobbydalers then broke with a swift move down the right but it was cleared. Kirby continued to work hard but the Silsden midfield were being pushed back. Craig Bentham was dispossessed and Wilson broke past Hudson but his shot lacked power.

Five minutes before the break, Benn broke up the Silsden right, played a one two with Bentham before releasing Kirby. The striker’s effort grazed the far post. With the Silsden defence unsettled, Austin set up two chances for the home side. Aigar shot wide and Austin’s effort sailed over the bar! On the stroke of half-time a slick move from Silsden ended with Jake Taylor-Mountford heading over.

The second half started with Main’s Aigar missing a glorious chance before Higginson saved another effort with his feet. For much of the half Main played with nine

players back and relied on their two strikers to stretch the Cobbydalers in the other half. Silsden struggled to get through a packed midfield. Josh Kaine, returning from injury, came on for Barnes.

Kaine was soon in the action denying Wilson, before Aigar failed to get a touch on another good chance. Main had a great chance when they broke through the Silsden defence only to be flagged for offside. It looked a hard decision. Two minutes later, Hudson failed to track substitute Aaron MOXHAM, who netted a third…HE did appear to be offside. Déjà vu!

Silsden had few opportunities to get back in the game. Benn had another good break and Mitchell was denied by the home keeper. Liam Hudson headed over the Main bar before Higginson saved well to deny Maltby a fourth.

Two disappointing results after last Saturday’s demolition of Garforth. This week the Cobbydalers entertain Yorkshire Amateurs at the Cobbydaler Construction Stadium.

                                                   BARTON TOWN 3 v 0 SILSDEN A.F.C.

                              Hinchcliffe 16, 70. Goddard 90.                         Att. 110.

COBBYDALERS BROUGHT BACK DOWN TO EARTH

The Cobbydalers travelled to the Easy Buy Stadium at Barton-upon- Humber last night, looking to build on Saturday’s fine win against Garforth. The Swans, who had struggled in the league to date, losing their opening four games, had progressed in both the FA Cup and Vase. They were hoping to put things right against the Cobbydalers, who were without leading scorer Aidan Kirby, who was replaced by Ben Wignall.

The Swans were soon on the attack but Jay Benn denied them a chance at goal. Silsden counter-attacked with Khurram Shazad driving the ball to Arley Barnes, who saw his cross cleared. Benn then broke up the right, played a one-two with Mitchell, before hitting a low shot which Harvey Cartwright saved.

Will Waudby created an opening for brother Tom, who shot over the Silsden bar. Five minutes later Barton were ahead, Tom Waudby playing the ball to Ben Hinchliffe, whose side footed volley flew past the Silsden keeper and into the back of the net. Cobbydalers keeper Alfie Darke then denied Tom Waudby a second.

Barton’s confidence grew and Josh Brown and Dan Illingworth were both called upon to keep Silsden in the game. Hinchliffe went close with a header, Tom Waudby’s cross testing the Silsden defence. The battle between Brown and Illingworth against Tom Waudby and Hinchcliffe was intriguing with the Silsden defenders managing to keep the deficit to one goal.

On forty minutes Wignall suffered a head injury and was replaced by Danny Forrest who was soon in the action, spreading to ball to Craig Bentham. His cross-cum-shot was just wide. In the dying minutes of the half Shazad hit a dipping volley which just cleared the cross-bar

Silsden began the second half on the offensive but the home defence stood firm. Five minutes after the restart Silsden were down to ten men when Brown was punished for a late tackle on Craig Disley, which could have been a lot worse in different circumstances. Matt Plummer was sent off for his reaction in the melee which ensued following the tackle. Four minutes later, Bentham was lucky to receive only a caution after his rash challenge on Disley.

For a short period the players lost the plot. Barton were in an attacking position. Darke was the next to transgress. A dangerous tackle only received a caution but the keeper was badly injured and had to be replaced by Ben Higginson.

Fortunately the players realised this was a game of football. The Swans netted a second. Tom Waudby was the architect. He squared the ball to HINCHCLIFFE. His first shot cannoned off the bar, but he was able to receive it again and tap home at the second attempt.

Bentham broke up another attack before Shazad set up Mitchell, who saw his effort clear the bar. Hinchcliffe went closer at the other end rattling the woodwork. Khurram then tested Harvey Cartwright in the Swans goal, a youngster on loan from Hull.

Mitchell kept driving the Cobbydalers forwards. A goalmouth scramble saw three efforts blocked on the Swans’ goal line.   Illingworth was pushed up front but the home side netted a third in stoppage time, GODDARD slipping the ball passed the isolated Silsden keeper. Forrest set up Hardisty-Blackwell in the dying sends but Cartwright tipped the ball over.

Silsden will have to regroup for the match at Maltby Main on Saturday. Fortunately Josh Kaine will soon be available and Chris Wademan is back from Down Under.

Saturday, Sept 7th 2019

                                                     SILSDEN A.F.C. 7 v 1  GARFORTH TOWN

                          Kirby 31 (Pen), 59, 61.                                                              Priestley 67 (Pen) Taylor-Mountford 38, 40. Illingworth 44, Benn 67                                  Att. 163.

SEVEN-UP FOR RAMPANT COBBYDALERS

The Cobbydalers entertained Garforth Town on Saturday in a game which provided some rich entertainment for the home side. Town, fourth in the table, unbeaten in the league and still in the F.A. Vase, were expected to provide a stern test for the Cobbydalers who had lost their last two games.

Danny Forrest introduced two new signings, Jay Benn at right back and Jake Taylor-Mountford on the left side of the forward line, both of whom were trainees at Halifax Town. The Cobbydalers were still without Kaine and Moses and Sorhaindo was unavailable.

True to form Town were soon on the attack but Dan Illingworth broke up two early attacks.             Silsden were guilty of surrendering possession too easily and Sean Hunter broke down the right and crossed to Sam Barker whose weak effort was comfortably saved by Alfie Darke. Left back Danny Buttle slung over two dangerous crosses which Illingworth again cleared.

Gradually Silsden settled, Jay Benn releasing Kirby on the right, the striker’s shot being cleared and then a slick move up the right was halted. The two new boys soon settled and Jay Benn had a good dribble down the right before feeding Khurram Shazad. A dip of the shoulder and a pass to Kirby ended with Toby Wells making a fine save.

Both sides created half chances. Benn had a shot cleared and then Josh Brown headed clear at the other end. Shazad slid the ball to Taylor-Mountford whose shot was well saved by Wells.

The game changed in a fifteen minutes spell before the break. Joe Mitchell passed the ball up the right and it was crossed to the edge of the penalty area. Inexplicably Joe Colley handled the ball. Penalty!. Up stepped KIRBY to put the reds ahead. Silsden began to spread the ball about and create openings. A superb move up the right saw Barnes feed Khurram, back to Barnes and out to the overlapping Everingham. He crossed to Kirby, who set up Khurram. His shot was saved by Wells but the moved signalled the confidence of the Cobbydalers with the new boys settling in quickly.

A minute later Everingham sent Barnes down the right. His cross was met by TAYLOR-MOUNTFORD who drove it home. Two minutes later TAYLOR-MOUNTFORD got his second, latching on to a through ball from Mitchell before leaving the Town keeper helpless. Town were shell shocked. Mitchell’s superb curler was tipped over by Wells but ILLINGWORTH netted a fourth on the stroke of half time.

Town’s Dan Williams went close in the opening minutes of the second half but the Cobbydalers were soon creating more chances with some slick “pass and move” football. Mitchell slid the ball to the marauding Benn who crossed to Taylor-Mountford. The debutant almost completed a twelve-minute hat-trick! Garforth showed some spirit and Illingworth and Brown were forced to charge-down efforts from Dan Williams.

KIRBY, who was relishing the support from his team-mates, then netted a brace in the space of two minutes, running onto a through ball before sliding the ball wide of Wells and completed his hat-trick when Taylor-Mountford broke clear, drew his marker, before sliding the ball to KIRBY, who left Wells helpless.

Mitchell almost made it seven before BENN broke his way up the right, cut inside and played a one-two before punishing the visitors.  Taylor-Mountford was unlucky not to complete his hat-trick when his curled effort rattled the cross-bar.

With Tuesday’s game away at Barton-on-Humber on his mind, Danny Forrest brought on three substitutes for the final fifteen minutes. Ben Wignall almost netted a minute later but was denied by Priestly. Town’s Priestly almost scored with a header at the back post and Sam Barker shot wide before PRIESTLY netted a penalty conceded by Illingworth. A six-man move ended with Wells making a superb save before Hardisty-Blackwell headed wide at the far post.

It had been a thrilling game for the Cobbydalers and the new boys slotted in well. It was Garforth’s heaviest defeat for eighteen months. The scoreline may have flattered Silsden but Forrest will now be expecting his charges to build on the victory.

On Saturday the Cobbydaler’s travel to Malty Main.

YOUNG COBBYDALERS’ SLICK FOOTBALL DAZZLES  MINERS

The Cobbydalers Under 18’s were one of 546 clubs entered in this seasons FA Youth Cup, won last season in a penalty shoot-out, Liverpool being the victors against Manchester City. The Cobbydalers’ youngsters were one of 358 clubs in the preliminary round.

Entertaining Staveley Miners Welfare, the Yorkshire boys produced some exhilarating football on a rain swept night at the Cobbydale Construction Stadium.

Silsden dominated the opening exchanges with some slick passing on a surface which lent itself to pass-and-run football. Harrison Hardisty-Blackwell, who has experience with the Cobbydalers first team, was a constant threat to the visitors, shooting over the bar in the 6th minute. Miners’ Culpit broke up the next attack before Harry Parsons headed over the visitors’ bar.

The Cobbydalers created numerous chances early on, with William Procter shooting wide after creating an opening. Procter’s next effort lacked power and Miners’ keeper, Declan Starkey, got a hand on Hardisty-Blackwell’s powerful shot.

The Cobbydalers were solid at the back, keeping possession and willing to keep the ball before an opening occurred. Adam Gregory began to run the midfield. If there was any criticism of the Silsden youngsters it was that they weren’t clinical in front of goal. That changed when Toby CUNNINGHAM hit a screamer into the top corner of the Miners’ goal on 33 minutes.

Marshall Hammond then had an effort cleared for a corner. The visitors were hardly in the game with Sammy Forsdyke and Harry Parsons very comfortable  at the back for  Silsden. However Kian White got the ball in the Silsden net two minutes before the break.  The goal was chalked off because the referee had seen an infringement and Silsden were awarded a free kick. The ball was worked to Jamie Milner who threaded it through the visitors’ defence.  HARDISTY-BLACKWELL put the Reds two up.

Silsden were even more dominant in the second half. A superb tackle by Joe Lawrence led to a swift break. Hammond latched onto a through ball but saw his effort blocked. Procter followed up but was denied by Sadler. The tenacious Regan Waite then released Hardisty-Blackwell who had two chances but both lacked power.

Waites powerful run down the right released Cunningham who slid the ball to Hardisty-Blackwell whose shot was saved. The striker could easily have had a hat-trick in the opening ten minutes of the second half had he been more ruthless.

Superb control of a long ball saw Hammond break down the wing. The ball was crossed to Milner whose fierce shot rattled the Staveley bar. The keeper then saved Joe Lawrence’s effort. At two-nil Staveley were still in the game and Cunningham did well to deny the visitors a goal on 65 minutes. Waite’s strong run was then halted by Reece Hughes before Lawrence broke down the left but his shot lacked power.

On 70 minutes Hammond slid the ball to HARDISTY-BLACKWELL, whose screamer from outside the box made it three.

The visitors had not posed many questions for Silsden keeper Richard Starkey but the keeper was always involved as Silsden were always willing to involve the keeper when they sought to keep possession.  Substitutes Gledhill, Bridge and Oliver Tetteroo came on for the final ten minutes. A comprehensive win but they might not get as many chances as they progress and need to be more ruthless in their finishing.

The Cobbydalers now entertain the winners of the York City and Pontefract Collieries in the first round proper.

SILSDEN U18s. Starkey, Waite, Lawrence, Cunningham, Forsdyke, Parsons, Milner, Gregory, Hardisty-Blackwell, Hammond. Gledhill, Bridge, Tetteroo.

Newton Aycliffe 2-1 Silsden AFC

THE BUILDBASE FA VASE 2019-2020. First Qualifying Round

Saturday, August 31st 2019

              NEWTON AYCLIFFE  F.C. 2  V  1 SILSDEN A.F.C.

O.g.24. Thexton 47.                            Shazad 66.      Att. 120.

COBBYDALERS  DENIED  BY ASSISTANT’S FLAG.     NO V.A.R. !

The Cobbydalers travelled to Durham to face Ebac Northern League Division One side Newton Aycliffe on Saturday for the first Qualifying Round of this seasons FA Vase. The Silsden outfit had their best ever run  in the Vase last season, when they reached the third round proper, when they were beaten by semi-finalists Northwich Victoria.

Aycliffe stood 9th and Silsden 10th in their respective leagues, although the home side had progressed to the next stage of the FA Cup, whilst the Cobbydalers had lost in a tense replay against Northwich Vics. Skipper Josh Kaine, who was injured, was replaced by Liam Hudson whilst Khurram Shazad returned to the starting line-up.

It was a glorious afternoon at The Beaumont Landscapes Stadium. The Durham outfit tested the Silsden defence in the opening minutes but it was the Cobbydalers who created the first chance. Dan Illingworth slid the ball to Arley Barnes who released Mark Everingham on the right. The full-back broke up the wing and set up Aidan Kirby whose effort was just wide of the far post.

Josh Brown broke up Aycliffe’s next attack before Dean Thexton fired over the Silsden bar. A long throw-in caught Silsden’s defence off-guard but Nick Green volleyed over from an acute angle. Shaun Ryder was denied by Illingworth before Laurence Sorhaindo cut in from the left. Unfortunately his powerful shot was into the midriff of Aycliffe keeper Adam Pickford.

Another Silsden attack was thwarted. Johnson Ballam was finding lots of space on the Aycliffe right and it was his cross which was eventually diverted into the Silsden net off a Silsden defender. Silsden responded with a break from Everingham who fired over, before Silsden Keeper Alfie Darke made a superb save from Richardson’s header.

Shazad hit a free kick over the bar at the other end before Ballam cut through a sloppy defence. McNamara’s dive in the box may have won an Oscar but it didn’t fool the referee! Hudson then denied Ryder at the expense of a corner, which was cleared.

Midfield dynamo Joe Mitchell, who had broken up play several times in the first half, went close with a powerful shot before Shazad slid the ball to Kirby, who delayed his effort which was eventually charged down.

Silsden were only a goal down at the break thanks to some solid defending. The front men hadn’t functioned as well as they might have, against a resolute defence, but the Cobbydalers were still in the game.

Two minutes into the second half that changed. Illingworth and Barnes, who had been exchanging passes, were closed down and the ball ran to Josh Brown. Brown missed the ball and THEXTON ran in to score a simple goal.

The Cobbydalers began to play some neat football without looking dangerous, and they started to push Aycliffe back with Sorhaindo and Shazad creating more chances. The home side were a threat on the break but Silsden were able to resist. Sorhaindo tested the keeper before Shazad headed Barnes’ cross over the bar.   Barnes then shot wide. Eventually the pressure told. Sorhaindo put SHAZAD through to net after the keeper had parried his first effort.

Illingworth and Brown kept it tight at the back as Silsden began to apply some pressure. Sorhaindo shot over before his run up the wing five minutes later led to a chance for Mitchell, whose shot was saved for a corner. Illingworth headed wide.

Silsden continued to pass in neat triangles without creating chances. Sorhaindo went close before Matthew Lowrie was dismissed for a reckless challenge. The game went into stoppage time Barnes shot over before Silsden “equalised”. The assistant’s flag went up! Offside!  The keeper was on the goal line…but so was an Aycliffe defender. Maybe the assistant was unsighted. Silsden protested but there was no V.A.R.!

On a better day the Cobbydalers might have won. They have played better this season. Hopefully they can bounce back on Saturday when they face Garforth Town, before travelling to Barton-on-Humber on Tuesday 10th Sept.

NEWTON AYCLIFFE FC. Pickford, Ballam (Pennal 78), Green, Costello Carr 40) Brown, McNamara, Barnes, Ryder, Thexton, Richardson, Read(Redford 72). Subs not used Wood, Harrison. Pickering.

SILSDEN AFC. Darke, Everingham, Hudson, Bentham (Wignall 84), Illingworth, Brown, Barnes, Mitchell, Kirby, Shazad, Sorhaindo. Subs not used. Hardisty-Blackwell, Higginson, Higman, Forrest.

THE FA VASE 2019-20

Silsden lie in 10th place in the Toolstation Northern Counties East table with two wins and one defeat. Newton Aycliffe lie in 8th position with three wins and one defeat. Like the Cobbydalers they were knocked out in the Extra-Preliminary Round of the Buildbase FA Cup going down 2-0 against Northallerton Town.
