LIVERSEDGE F.C. 2 v 1 SILSDEN A.F.C. Walton 4, Jackson 90. Sorhaindo 35. Att. 205

COBBYDALERS SUNK AGAIN IN THE DYING MINUTE

The Cobbydalers conceded another late goal to extend their winless run to six. It was another spirited performance by the Silsden outfit and the result was in doubt until the final whistle. Sedge’s win took them up to 2nd place in the NCEL Premier Division table.

Silsden were on the back foot at the start with Josh Kaine only clearing Sedge’s first attack to Oliver Fearon who shot wide. The next attack ended with the opener for Joe WALTON after Joe Kenny had crossed the ball from the right and Oliver Fearon setting up the scorer.

Silsden were rattled. Jake Thompson broke past Mark Everingham before crossing to Fearon who flicked the ball to the far post. Ben Higginson tipped the ball for a corner. High balls were the main threat with the throw-ins of Liam Marsden a real test. Thomson wasted a free kick from the edge of the Silsden penalty area.

Silsden gradually settled and Lawrence Sorhaindo linked well with Jake Taylor-Mountford before bringing a fine save from Josh Lill in the Sedge goal. Arley Barnes then headed over the bar after good work by Taylor-Mountford.

Liversedge were looking for a second with Thomson proving a threat down the right. Kaine cleared off the line before Ben Higginson made a magnificent save to deny Fearon, who had weaved his way through the Reds’ defence. Thomson had a shot deflected for a corner which Walton headed over the bar.

Higginson was caught out by Thomson but Kaine cleared off the line before the Silsden keeper made a magnificent save to deny Fearon. Jay Benn was caught out of position allowing Kenny to slip through. Dan Illingworth blocked Kenny’s shot.

Silsden’s resolve built up confidence and a pacey run by Benn up the right ended with SORHAINDO slotting in the full-back’s perfect cross. Walton fired over at the other end before Benn and Sorhaindo exchanged passes when the latter saw a shot blocked. Taylor-Mountford then sped up the left. Two shots on target were blocked before the winger’s third effort was marginally too high. Patient build up led to a chance for Sorhaindo but his low shot lacked venom.

The final ten minutes had lifted the Cobbydalers, who began to dominate possession at the start of the second half. Joe Mitchell had an effort blocked before Barnes released Benn up the right. Benn slid the ball across but it was cleared. Silsden continued to control the game.

For the first time this season the Silsden fans saw the use of the “sin-bin”; Liversedge’s Walton spending ten minutes in for dissent. Liversedge were reduced to spasmodic attacks, although a cross from Kenny went begging. Chris Wademan had two shots blocked before a Mitchell effort cleared the bar,

Substitutes Khurram Shazad and Aidan Kirby came on. Shazad immediately set up Kirby who fired over. Five minutes later, in a reprise, Kirby hit the side netting. A further slick passing move ended with Taylor-Mountford having a shot saved.

With ten minutes left both sides strove for the points. Josh Lill came off his line to deny Sorhaindo whilst Kaine stopped Alex Lill at the other end. Khurram curled a shot wide. His one-two, one-two with Marco Basic almost brought the decisive goal.

At the other end Kaine and Illingworth both broke up attacks. Josh Brown came on and immediately cleared off the line before a long throw-in was headed on. In a packed box Benn blocked a shot but JACKSON fired home from close range. It was a cruel blow for the Cobbydalers who had fought so hard and had played such good football.

Heads were down after the defeat to a late goal but it was clear that the Cobbydalers are beginning to adapt to the more direct football they are experiencing this season. Next week they travel to Goole.
