SILSDEN AFC 0 v 7 BOOTLE FC

Att.135                                                  Cox 25, 59, Coulton 36, Pears 48, 79,                                                                                                                                    Ordish 77,    Goodwin 87.

          COBBYDALERS TAKEN TO THE CLEANERS

The opening exchanges of this game showed no indication of what the final result would be. A month ago the Cobbydalers travelled to Bootle and lost two-nil after Josh Kaine had been dismissed as two opponents chased a ball down. The visitors started brightly with some slick passing but Silsden managed to fend them off. The Merseysiders were the first to create an opening when Lee Hughes crossed to Ryan Cox, who back heeled the ball towards the net. Reece Lyndon cleared for a corner. Ben Jago took it but Sean Coulton’s header sailed over the bar. After a rotation of passes, Connor Millington shot wide.

Silsden first foray forwards saw Aidan Kirby feeding Craig Bentham, whose powerful effort was blocked. Back came Bootle with Matt Coughlan sliding a ball through to Carl Pears but his shot was cleared by Lyndon. Chris Wademan then slipped the ball to Kirby but his cross eluded Joe Gaughan. A minute later Wademan broke past three defenders, only to be halted by Coulton. It was a cynical foul. He was shown a yellow card. A minute later Mark Everingham found Gaughan, who hit a low shot from twenty five yards which Jones saved at full stretch.

On twenty three minutes Kirby was dismissed. Two minutes earlier he had been booked for foul and abusive language. He was then involved in a fracas in front of the dug-outs. He can have no complaints. That Coulton only received a yellow when Wademan was breaking through, it felt like rough justice. Kirby is one of six Silsden players to have been sent off this season. Kirby, Hancock and Illingworth’s sendings off were justified but Kaine (at Bootle), Lyndon and Wademan may feel the decisions against their mistimed tackles were a tad hash.

The game went on. Two minutes after the restart Hughes crossed and COX put the visitors ahead. Everingham broke up the next attack before Lyndon headed down a corner to Luke Rhodes, who saw his powerful shot saved by Jones. Gaughan was then substituted as a precaution. Matty Moses replaced him. The Cobbydalers had started without Joe Mitchell (on the bench), Illingworth, Kaine and Sultan and had Barnes at centre back and Storrie at right back. The lack of height led to the second goal with COULTON nodding a corner home at the far post.

Forrest had the chance to get the ten men focussed at half time but three minutes after the restart a powerful shot from Cox was parried by Lee and Carl PEARS followed up to make it three-nil. When Lyndon headed a corner into the path of COX he buried it. Four-nil down with thirty minutes left. Mitchell came on for Everingham and soon hit a screamer. It was just wide.

A mix up at the back between Lee and Barnes gave Mike ORDISH time and space to pass the ball into the unguarded net. No one seemed to be prepared to make a solid defence in order to prevent a whitewash. The midfield was overrun and PEARS made it six two minutes later. Storrie made a brilliant run from the halfway into the goal area. His shot was saved and he appeared to pick up a groin injury. Unfortunately, the disarray in the team and the lack of guile led to the heaviest defeat in recent times. Seven-nil, GOODWIN adding the seventh three minutes from time.

There were some positives. Mitchell looked sharp when he came on and Wademan worked hard up front. On the day too many players were below par. With a game at Burscough on Tuesday and the F.A. Vase game against Northwich Victoria on Saturday, Forrest will have to manage his charges carefully. A fully focussed team should not be overawed by the challenges.

MATCH REPORT I Silsden AFC 2-1 Hanley Town

The North West Counties Football League Premier Division 2018-19
Saturday, 17 November 2018.

SILSDEN AFC 2 v. Hanley Town 1
Kirby 56, Lyndon 76                 Keates 70

                               Att. 175

SILSDEN SECURE WELCOME WIN

Following last week’s home defeat to Irlam, a good weeks training, including match analysis saw Danny Forrest bring experienced Craig Bentham back into midfield, drop Will Storrie back in to a right back berth, along with skipper Josh Kaine replacing the injured Dan Illingworth and bringing the fit again Chris Wademan into midfield.

Initially both teams struggled to settle into their stride but the locals looked the most likely, and after 5 minutes Wademan went close when he collected the ball on the left hand side of the box and his cross-shot flashed across the 6 yard box but went narrowly wide.

Although Silsden probably had the better of the early possession, neither side created any clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities causing either ‘keeper to get their gloves dirty, and although the locals again came close with playmaker Joe Gaughan’s shot, again from the left hand side of the box, a visiting defender managed to block to avert the danger.

As Silsden gained the upper hand, the visitors had to revert to repeated fouling all over the park which was eventually punished by referee Walsh giving Stanyer a yellow card. From the resulting free kick out on the right, Niall Sultan played short to Gaughan but his shot was closed down and blocked.

Another free kick from Sultan found Bentham’s angled run, but his cross from the right bye-line was blocked and cleared by Hanley skipper Josh Thorpe. But then things started to get scrappy and Sultan was booked for dissent following his foul, swiftly followed by Hanley’s Lees for another foul as the game started to deteriorate.

In the 42nd minute Hanley broke down the left courtesy of Callum Feeney’s sliced ball. Stanyer crossed dangerously finding the diminutive Lewis Salmon, who fluffed the chance under pressure from the vigilant Kaine and Lyndon. As the game went from end to end, Gaughan broke free on the left and played a great ball across the 6 yard box with nobody there to get that vital touch. And just before the half-time whistle Salmon’s header drifted wide of Lee’s right hand post.

Five minutes into the second half Aidan Kirby’s attempt to break the visitors back line was halted by the assistant’s flag, but he wasn’t to be denied in the 56th minute when he pursued a bouncing high ball in the Hanley half. He won the challenge before getting the ball down and dribbling from the left into a central position and striking at goal. His shot taking a wicked deflection, looping up and over Mellor to open the scoring for the Cobbydalers.

Then at the other end Michael Keates stung Lee’s fingertips with a fierce drive cutting in from the right as he broke clear of the Silsden defence after possession was lost in midfield, the Cobbydalers custodian diverting away for a corner. The resulting corner was played over dangerously, but there was no Hanley player on hand to convert and the chance went begging.

As Silsden settled into the game in the second period, Storrie had a great run on the right, cut in and fired a low shot which appeared to take a deflection before Mellor collapsed low to his right to smother at his near post on 63 minutes. However, minutes later Lee dropped on the ball following a great defensive block after Keates’ shot threatened the home goal.

Lee then had to be alert minutes later to tip away Feeney’s goal-bound effort, but from the resulting corner Conor’s flag kick evaded the Silsden defence and Keates tapped in from close range to level the scores at 1-1.

The visitors looked visibly lifted by the goal and sensed an opportunity, but Silsden held firm to weather the storm, looking for a more direct route to get their noses back in front again. And they got their just rewards when, following yet another free kick conceded on the right, Sultan’s long ball out left in the visitors box found Gaughan’s header which was diverted back into the path of Lyndon, who swept the ball into the roof of the net to make it 2-1.

Although Silsden pushed hard to find a third goal to kill the game off, Hanley’s direct approach was always a threat, and the locals had to keep their concentration and composure. Lyndon was like a warrior surging forwards and his beautiful right footed cross on one of his sorties into enemy lines found no teammates in the danger area. At the other end Storrie and Kaine combined well to snuff out Salmon’s dangerous break down the left, with 5 minutes remaining. Then Wademan fired his shot narrowly wide with the game stretched in the dying minutes. But right at the death in added time, another Hanley break saw the ball land at Keates’ feet invitingly, but he scooped his shot over to miss a glorious chance to level the scores for the visitors, as the Cobbydalers held on to register their first league win in seven games to the delight of the Silsden faithful.

MISTAKES PROVE COSTLY FOR LACKLUSTRE COBBYDALERS

Manager Danny Forrest had to shuffle the pack again due to unavailability because to injuries, suspensions & holidays etc. but welcomed back Matty Moses from long-term injury along with ‘keeper Callum Jakovlevs returning from Prestwich to the bench.

The game started scrappily with little cohesive passing and it was the visitors who drew first blood as early as the 8th minute, when following a throw in on the right the ball was played into the Silsden box. Matthew Boland’s flicked header looked to be going wide but it struck Silsden’s right upright and ricocheted out in front of goal. The ball was cleared but struck Boland and ball trickled over the line to make it 1-0 to Irlam.

Silsden struggled to get their slick passing game going and Irlam grew in confidence, but Sammy Lee’s raking kick out found Niall Sultan on the left flank. Sultan cleverly beat his man before delivering a deep cross to the far post which was met by strike partner, Aidan Kirby’s salmon-like leap. His header was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by visitors’ custodian Lee White. Then within 30 seconds the ball was cleared up the pitch into midfield,  a through ball finding Liam Pollitt’s run beyond the Silsden back line. Looking suspiciously offside, but in the absence of the liners flag being raised, Pollitt drew Lee and slid the ball home to double the visitors advantage.

Silsden were struggling to get a foothold in the game and Irlam threatened again from Boland’s near post corner from the left which was headed over by the diving Pollitt. This was followed up by Karl Cassell’s header being tipped away by Lee.

Silsden did start to get to grips after half an hour and a dangerous ball into the box from Moses on the bye-line was dropped by ‘keeper White. The ball was cleared. On 36 minutes Reece Lyndon’s probing long through ball found Kirby who broke into the box. However his shot was blocked and the keeper gratefully gathered.  Just before the half-time break a superb ball from Danny Illingworth to Will Storrie saw the speed merchant set the ball back for Moses but his curling delivery once again evaded the converging red shirts and drifted to safety.

After a serious half-time roasting from a most unhappy manager Silsden came out with a bit more purpose and sought a way back into the game. In the 50th minute Kirby drew a foul on the right hand corner of the Irlam box and Joe Gaughan coolly slotted home the resulting spot kick to make it one two. This should have given the Cobbydalers the lift that they needed to get back into the game but a harshly awarded penalty at the other end against the unfortunate Moses for a foul on Pollitt gave Boland the opportunity to restore Irlam’s two goal cushion. He duly obliged by sending Lee the wrong way from the spot to make it 1-3.

Irlam right back, Andre Stewart then broke forward on 71 minutes but his low shot was comfortably gathered by Lee. Minutes later Storrie’s overloaded free kick from the left was dangerously hooked back into the visitor’s box by Illingworth ‘Keeper White flapped at it and the ball fell invitingly for Sultan but his shot cleared the bar when he should have done better.

Following this, a long range effort from Moses went over the Irlam bar as the visitors cleared their lines and then on 77 minutes Sultan’s free kick into the box found Lee Rhodes but he headed straight at White. Although Silsden were now pressing hard there were still signs of danger at the other end and when Illingworth was caught on the ball and robbed by Pollitt, Lee had to be alert to come out and divert his shot away for a corner.

Silsden substituted Luke Baldwin for Sultan on 83 minutes and within 30 seconds found themselves  further behind, following a lack of concentration after a throw in their own half. Silsden lost possession again and Pollitt found Marcus Perry’s central run and his scuffed shot wrong-footed Lee to make it 1-4.

Manager Forrest then withdrew Moses and Richard Ainscough, bringing on youngsters Ben Darkins and Harrison Hardisty-Blackwell and in the 85th minute Storrie played a superb free kick into the visitors box from out on the left deep in the Irlam half and Lyndon powered his header past a despairing ‘keeper to make it 2-4.

However Silsden’s misery was completed in the 89th minute, when playing out from the back Lyndon’s ball to Rhodes found the big man under pressure and this time he was dispossessed by Liam Morrison. Morrison  carried the ball forward before chipping into the unguarded goal to score Irlam’s fifth goal to seal the win at 2-5.

SILSDEN AFC: Lee, Moses (Darkins 85), Everingham, Ainscough (Hardisty-Blackwell 85), Illingworth, Lyndon, Rhodes, Gaughan ©, Storrie, Kirby, Sultan (Baldwin 83) Subs not used: Jakovlevs & Forrest.

Attendances have increased over the last 18 months making the boards a brilliant tool to gain exposure for businesses such as FMR. The FMR logo can also be seen regularly on our new club website, this also features a ‘click through’ to the FMR website – in just over two months the FMR logo has been seen 40,000 times on our website and had a series of ‘click throughs’. As a club we are proud to partner with and support such a fantastic and humble family owned business.

Frizinghall Models & Railways

If you are looking for Model Railways, Plastic Kits, Scalextric, Games Workshop, or general hobby tools, paints and materials, then visit our well stocked shop in Baildon. Our staff have excellent hands on modelling experience and can help both the novice and the experienced modeller alike.

Our shop is situated on the new industrial park on Otley Road, close to Hoyle Court and the ‘Halfway House’. We share the same building as John Ayrey Die-Casts on Sapper Jordan Rossi Park. We are easy to find, and have ample on-site parking.

The business dates back to January 1950, when John Ayrey and his father bought an existing model shop in Frizinghall, Bradford. John eventually had a total of four retail shops in the north of England plus a thriving international wholesale business. However, when John’s father died in 1976, the Frizinghall shop was sold to a customer, Arthur ‘Tug’ Wilson, a retired police sergeant. Arthur and later his son Stephen and family ran the shop until 2006 when a move was made to an industrial unit in Hillam Road, Bradford.

Ten years on and by early 2016 Stephen and his family decided it was time to retire from the retail trade, and the business was offered for sale as a going concern – initially without success!

The sale of the FMR business to the owners of John Ayrey Die-Casts was agreed towards the end of 2016 but was not completed until April 2017 after the necessary building alterations had been carried out at the new joint premises in Baildon.

The shop is located on the first floor of the John Ayrey Die-Casts building, served by both stairs and a lift. It is open to the public five days a week Monday to Saturday (Closed Wednesday) 09.30 to 17.30. We are only a few minutes walk from Baildon Railway Station, and buses pass on Otley Road behind us.

In the shop you can browse a huge range of Model Railway items, Plastic kits, Tools, Paint, etc. from all the main manufacturers and many not so well known. Help and advice is always available from the staff and a wide range of pre-owned items are always in stock.

FORREST ADDS TO SQUAD | Ainscough Joins, Trueman & Jakovlevs Return

FORREST ADDS TO SQUAD | Ainscough Joins, Trueman & Jakovlevs Return.

Over the last two weeks, Danny Forrest has moved to bolster the Silsden AFC squad in the light of recent suspensions and injuries.

25 year old midfielder Rick Ainscough joins after a period training with Clitheroe FC. Rick has a wealth of experience, playing abroad since leaving Blackburn Rovers at the age of 18 including spells in the USA, Canada, Finland and Gibraltar.

Re-joining the club are midfielder Mark Trueman and goalkeeper Callum Jakovlevs.

Manager Danny Forrest had his say:

”From the first training session it was obvious to see Rick possesses quality. In the two games he has played so far we have seen him grow and I’m looking forward to seeing more strong performances in a Silsden shirt. Rick has all the tools to be a quality player for the club, once he’s fully settled in and his match fitness improves I’m confident we’ll see him have a huge effect on games. I’d also like to say thank you to Clitheroe FC Manager Lee Ashforth for his assistance on the signing of Rick.

I was delighted to see Mark Trueman back in a Silsden shirt on Saturday in our FA Vase game against Bedlington. He’s a player of real quality and he put in an outstanding performance. He walked back in the dressing room as if he’d never been away and the rest of the lads have a huge respect for him. His role as Youth Team Manager at Bradford City takes priority of course and he signs on dual registration with Thackley, so we may not see him as regularly as we’d like but just to have him back involved with the club is a boost for everyone.

It’s also great to have Callum back! He will challenge Sammy Lee and Matt Keen for the number one spot. Callum has been a great player for the club over the past two years, I know the qualities he has and he just needs some confidence back. Callum is hungrier then ever and I’m sure he’ll push Sam all the way, the competition is healthy and can only be a positive for the squad.”

MATCH REPORT I Silsden AFC 3-1 Bedlington Terriers

THE BUILDBASE FA VASE 2018-19 2nd Round

Saturday, November 3rd 2018

SILSDEN AFC 3 v 0 BEDLINGTON TERRIERS FC

Gaughan 62, 66, Kirby 82                     Gibson 2 . Att.151

GAUGHAN BRACE PUTS SILSDEN IN UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY.

Two goals from Gaughan, midway through the second half, helped the Cobbydalers to progress into the third round of the Buildbase FA VASE for the first time in their history. A third by Aidan Kirby settled the issue after Bedlington Terriers had taken the lead on two minutes.

With Arley Barnes out for three weeks, Danny Forrest re-signed Mark Trueman to bolster the midfield, which included home –debutant Richard Ainscough and Luke Rhodes. The manger was at last able to name a strong “bench”.

The visitors were soon on the attack, with Adam Harvey having a shot in the first minute. A minute later Reece Lyndon blocked a shot but failed to clear the ball and Ronnie JONES blasted it home. Silsden were stunned and when Rhodes under-hit a cross-field pass, Dylan Williamson intercepted the ball. Fortunately Sammy Lee was quickly off his goal line to smother the ball.

Silsden were still under pressure and, as Reece Kendall burst forwards, Williamson exploited the space left behind. Lyndon managed to get in a tackle. Silsden finally settled and Lyndon slid a through ball to Aiden Kirby. The striker’s pace saw him face to face with keeper Sean McCafferty. Kirby drifted to the left but his shot went agonisingly wide.

The pressure was maintained, with Gaughan almost finding Kirby in the clear, before Trueman’s corner caused some panic. Kendall had failed to reach the ball which then fell to Lyndon. He shot wide from close range. Once again Kendall was in an advanced position, leaving Williamson in the clear. The winger got past Lyndon but Lee blocked his shot.

Silsden’s best effort came when Kirby slid the ball to Gaughan. A deft back heal set up Rhodes but he fired over. Lyndon blasted Trueman’s next corner wide. Williamson still looked the main danger for the visitors but Kaine’s reading of the game denied him a chance to double the lead.

Ten minutes before the break, Trueman’s free-kick found Kendall, who fed Kirby. Again the effort was wide. Two minutes later Cameron Fenton played a one-two with Williamson. Only a superb save by Lee denied the visitors going two up! On the stroke of half time Sultan and Kirby set up Gaughan. His shot was saved by the Bedlington keeper.

The second half began as the first one had finished, with the game flowing from end to end. Rhodes broke into the Terriers’ area. His shot was blocked, so was Gaughan’s. At the other end Lyndon cleared Ronnie Jones’ effort off the line. Then three minutes later Lyndon denied the visitors yet again before Lee made a double save.

Silsden had ridden their luck. They began to create chances. Trueman was running the midfield. Two of his corners were punched clear before he curled a tempting chip into the danger area. GAUGHAN read it and headed home. Sultan then brought a fine save from the keeper before, four minutes after his opener, GAUGHAN punished a defensive error to put the Yorkshiremen ahead.

A quick break by substitute Michael Bell saw him hit the post before Kirby fired over at the other end. Wademan and Everingham came on for Sultan and Ainsworth. Gaughan took a free kick from the edge of the visitors’ area. The ball was blocked but KIRBY was there to blast it home. Kirby’s last goal was the late equaliser at Staveley. He has been close to netting on a number of occasions since then but Lady Luck has been against him. His work-rate is phenomenal – his team mates knew the goal would come.

With the result looking more and more certain, Williamson was sent off for a dangerous tackle. Everingham shot over the bar and the unlucky Bell hit the post again in stoppage time at the other end.

The Cobbydalers have never reached the third round of the Vase before, losing at this stage several times, including at Bedlington in2004! They have waited 14 years to put that result behind them!

Next Saturday the Cobbydalers entertain Irlam FC. K.O. 2.00pm

BEDLINGTON TERRIERS FC 1 v 0 SILSDEN AFC

Cockburn 38mins

SUPERB SILSDEN, BUT A BRIDGE TOO FAR

The last time Silsden were on Tyneside they defeated Hebburn Town in the FA Cup but on Saturday after crossing the Tyne they faced more illustrious opponents in Bedlington Terriers of the Northern Counties League. Five years ago the Terriers were on their way to Wembley where they lost by the only goal in the FA Vase Final. Five years ago Silsden were in the Craven league yet such is the progress of the Cobbydalers that this was no mismatch. There was a nip in the air and the pitch had only been declared playable two hours before kick-off as Silsden aimed to add to the scalps of Harrogate Railway and Tadcaster Albion but it was clear from the start that the Geordies were a class above any other outfits they had faced this season. The Terriers kept the ball on the ground and passed swiftly creating numerous opportunities in the first half but a superb defensive performance by the Yorkshiremen kept the result in doubt until the final whistle. Adam Reed had to make a desperate tackle in the opening minute and both Lang and Shandran shot wide in the first five minutes. Rosser then made three headed clearances before Harmison’s shot was blocked by the defensive wall. Hildreth, following up was wide of the mark with his shot. Silsden’s first foray forward was a swift break from Rhodes who fed Appelbee on the right but his cross was cleared and it was the Terriers turn to attack. Centre-forward Milner created a good opening for himself but he volleyed over Foulger’s bar. Hanson and Finn in midfield were finding the pace hard as the Geordies broke swiftly but Finn, in particular was spreading play trying to get the front men involved. Appelbee and Rhodes set up a chance for Longley but the shot was blocked. Rhodes’ header was cleared and Finn tested the goalkeper but Hedges was well marked and largely starved of the ball in the first half. The Terriers thought they had taken the lead in the 25th minute when Dixon headed in from close range but Foulger parried the ball and Nettleton cleared the danger. The Terriers increased the pressure but Nettleton, Reed and Lund held firm in the face of the onslaught. The interplay between Reed, Hanson and Finn was one of the few occasions when Silsden kept possession. Walton was wide from a corner, Milner headed over after a splendid run by Hildreth and Walton went close again although Finn had done well to ease him wide. Lund, the only survivor from the rebirth of the club, was outstanding and denied the Geordies time and time again with superb tackling but eventually the defence could hold out no longer. Finn did well to clear at the far post but as the ball was fired   back in Cockburn rose unchallenged to head home. Shandran then turned the defence but shot wildly over the bar. In the dying minutes of the half Foulger kept Silsden in the game with a save at the near post after Lang had sprung the offside trap. Finn’s long-range effort did have the home keeper scurrying to his far post as the half came to an end but it had been a lesson. in “total football” for the Cobbydalers but at one nil they were still in the game.

The second half began with Silsden under pressure again, Foulger punching out a dangerous ball and Lund making two important tackles. Nettleton then had to throw his body in the line of fire and both Cockburn and Shandran went close. Would Bedlington be made to pay for their failure to put the game beyond the visitors? Gradually Silsden came more into the game as Rosser was able to assert himself more in the midfield. Appelbee got through the defence only to shoot just wide and both Hedges and Longley were more involved in the game with the latter having a fierce drive saved by Robinson. The midfield pairing of Hanson and Finn, who had harried and chased in midfield were replaced by Gill and Holden and the former was soon in the action volleying over after good interplay between Appelbee and Longley. Both the home centre backs were called into action to clear crosses from the Yorkshiremen but even they were left standing when Hedges met Gill’s cross, unfortunately his header was just wide. Longley went the closest to getting an equaliser but his shot was blocked on the line. Rosser then had twenty yard volley tipped wide by Robinson before Reed and Foulger thwarted another attack of the Terriers. Silsden’s final chance came from a corner five minutes from time but Rosser’s header was over the bar. The Geordies, having watched Silsden the previous weekend had a much tougher game than they expected and were relieved when the final whistle went.

The Terriers were the better side but Silsden had given them a run for their money. The defensive play of the team as a whole had been outstanding and Manager Geary must hope that this kind of performance can be replicated in the League.

It was great day out for the Red Army who were made most welcome and reciprocated by swelling the bar takings! Thank you Terriers and good luck in the next round.

On Saturday Silsden entertain New Mills in the Division Two cup and on Tuesday they visit Garforth in the Yorkshire Cup. Just think Socrates might be asking “Where’s Silsden?”.

Cox 69, Jones 75                                       Att. 102

DEFEAT, BUT SEEDS OF RESURGENCE SHOWN

The Cobbydalers travelled to Bootle on Tuesday night determined to put Saturday’s five-nil defeat at 1874 Northwich behind them. They were buoyed by the return of Joe Gaughan, Reece Lyndon and Arley Barnes. Bootle, who had beaten Barlick 4-0 on Saturday, had moved into fourth place in the table, three points behind Silsden.

The game flowed from end to end with defences on both sides managing to thwart pacey and inventive attacks. Silsden looked lively with Niall Sultan looking sharp, but his shot was cleared after he was set up by Aidan Kirby. Josh Kaine broke up Bootle’s first attack before right-back Steve Hoy hit a long diagonal ball to Ryan Cox. The winger shot wide.

At the other end, a move involving Forrest and Gaughan ended with Reece Lyndon’s header being cleared in the goal area. Again Kaine intercepted another through ball.

Danny Forrest fed Reece Kendall down the left, but his cross was overhit. Kaine’s superb tackle on Carl Peers denied the Bucks a strike on goal. Bootle were inventive in attack but Kaine was reading the situation to perfection.

A mistake in the Silsden defence allowed Peers a chance but the striker hit it over the bar. At the back, Craig Bentham’s composure broke  up another attack. Niall Sultan burst down the right and crossed into the box. Gaughan chested it down but Kirby’s shot was a foot wide.   Lee saved Hickey’s low shot at the other end.

The game changed when Kaine was dismissed. Kaine and Cox were chasing down a Bootle through ball.  In a “coming together”, outside the area, the Silsden skipper caught Cox, who went down. A free kick was given but Kaine was shown the red card as he was the last defender, tough on the skipper who was distraught. Steven Jones’ free kick was comfortably saved by Lee.

Silsden then went close when Reece Kendall hit a ball to Kirby who fed Gaughan. His shot just cleared the bar. The half time whistle went.

The second half began with two Silsden attacks. Sultan had a shot blocked and then a superb move involving Forrest, Sultan, Gaughan and Rhodes was broken up, at the expense of a corner. The ten men were holding their own.

On fifty-six minutes Will Storrie replaced Forrest. Sultan broke down the right and crossed. Storrie burst into the goal area but, with his first touch of the ball, he headed over the bar. It was a golden chance!

The Bucks response was swift and only the midriff of Barnes prevented Steven Hoy giving them the lead. Lee saved another effort from Hoy at his near post. With twenty minutes left Gaughan, who was defending, tried to head the ball back to his keeper. COX intercepted it and slotted in the opener. Gaughan tried to atone for his error at the other end but his shot was blocked.

Five minutes later the Bucks went two up. Hoy hit a perfect ball to JONES who took the ball on his chest before lashing a volley into the top corner of the Silsden goal. The Cobbydalers still thought they had a chance but Kirby had an effort cleared off the line and Lyndon headed Everingham’s corner wide.

Forrest was delighted with the response of the team after last Saturday’s insipid performance.  He will have more players to choose from on Saturday and, hopefully, the Reds will have a little more luck when they entertain Bedlington Terriers in the second round of the F.A. Vase.

DEPLETED COBBYDALERS’ POOR RUN CONTINUES

The Cobbydalers recent poor run continued when they went down five-nil to 1874 Northwich. Injuries and self-inflicted suspensions have left the Silsden outfit bereft of the flair and drive they had at the beginning of the season.  A single defeat in their past eight games is proof that 1874 have improved over the past few weeks, whilst the Yorkshire men are finding the going tough at the moment.

With five regulars missing, Danny Forrest brought in new signing Rick Ainscough, a former Blackburn Rovers trainee who has had a spell in the USA, Canada, Finland and Gibraltar and has recently been training with Clitheroe.

1874 took the lead after only six minutes when Taylor Kennerley connected with Callum Gardner’s cross from the right with a crisp volley. A second would have followed had Sammy Lee not reacted smartly to save low to his left, when Gardner swept Scott McGowan’s centre towards goal shortly afterwards.

Silsden were lucky not to concede a penalty when Mark Everingham handled Kennerley’s cross, but the visitors were finding it hard to get a grip of the midfield. Northwich were in complete control but the Cobbydalers were holding out. Unfortunately, four minutes before the break, referee Adam Brown pointed to the spot after Gardner was tripped by Josh Kaine.  Lee blocked McGowan’s penalty, but the striker reacted sharply to hammer the loose ball into the net.

The pattern hardly changed at the start of the second half and it wasn’t long before Matthew Woolley, unmarked, headed in Kennerley’s free-kick from close-range.                                                                        Silsden responded when Richard Ainscough prompted Northwich keeper, James Coates  to make a fine save when he met Will Storrie’s cross. However Ainscough was conspicuous for the wrong reasons at the other end when he wrestled Jack Irlam to the floor at a set-piece to concede another spot-kick. McGowan left Lee with no chance to save his spot kick, making it four-nil.

Lee conceded an indirect free-kick when he picked up a back-pass! Riley struck the ball with force as if to emphasise 1874’s pressure. The Cobbydaler’s best attempt followed when Reece Kendall attacked from left-back and fired low from distance. The bounce in front of Coates made for an awkward save, before Lee fumbled Irlam’s free-kick in the final minutes but was relieved when no one followed up.

The Cobbydalers travel to Bootle on Tuesday before entertaining Bedlington Terriers  in the second round of the FA Vase on Saturday.
