MATCH REPORT | Handsworth 4-2 Silsden AFC

The Toolstation NCEL Premier Division 2021-2022

Saturday, July 31st 2021

HANDSWORTH FC  4  v  2  SILSDEN AFC

Silsden AFC Goalscorers: Normanton 59, Jagger 79 (pen).

Attendance: 162

After a disrupted period in the football calendar everyone hopes that the 2021-22 season will go ahead without any cancellations. The Cobbydalers travelled to Oliver’s Mount in Sheffield for their opening game against Handsworth. Unfortunately, a positive Covid test on Sammy Lee resulted in Danny Forrest having to bring in Hagie Damba, just recently signed. The Cobbydalers were still without several players through injury so the team was a mixture of old and new.

The artificial surface at the Express Worktops Stadium did give the Ambers an advantage and they were soon on the attack. A free-kick on five minutes was blocked by the Silsden defensive wall and then a corner was cleared.

A break forward by Silsden’s Joe Jagger was halted and the Ambers moved the ball quickly to Leon Howarth who was denied by Damba. Silsden’s first threat came when Harry Parson sent Khurram Shazad away down the left. His superb diagonal cross was cleared for a corner which was headed goalwards by Jagger. The home keeper saved and launched the ball forwards.  On twenty minutes the Silsden keeper brought down a Handsworth forward in the area and Mitch DUNNE netted from the penalty spot. Arley Barnes blocked another effort.

Eventually, the Cobbydalers settled with Joe Jagger flicking Jack Normanton’s cross just over the bar. Bradley Riley then cut across the box but he was crowded out.   Riley then fed Hancock but his shot lacked venom.

Midway through the half, Handsworth’s  Howarth cut across the penalty box but shot wide from a promising position…a let-off for the Cobbydalers. At the other end, Jagger broke through to the edge of the Ambers’ area. He was upended by left-back Richard Toothill.  Penalty or free-kick on the edge of the area? The latter! Normanton’s low shot was agonisingly wide.

Handsworth broke forwards and Jagger rose above the defence to head goalwards.  Damba tipped it over the bar and then punched the resulting corner clear. Silsden were holding their own although, with so many new players in the team, there were some misunderstandings. However, on 36 minutes Handsworth’s skipper Tom ROEBUCK headed home a corner. Two minutes later the Silsden keeper managed to flick the scorer’s next effort over the bar.

With five minutes of the half left the Cobbydalers began to enjoy some possession. Mohammed Qasim broke down the right and crossed to Jagger. His shot was flicked over by Townsend. Again the winger broke down the flank but this time his cross was just behind Jagger who managed to get a shot on target but without the power to beat the home keeper. Khurram Shazad then hit a shot over the bar before Handsworth broke forwards but Dunne’s shot was well saved by the Silsden keeper.

The half-time team talk looked to have worked well as the Cobbydalers began the half on the front foot. Qasim came into his own this half and immediately tested the home keeper with slick build-up play. Then Bradley Riley had a  cross cleared after he had been heavily challenged by Ethan Hobson, who was fortunate not to be cautioned at the least.  Jack Normanton then whipped in the free kick which Airey just failed to reach. Normanton was then harshly dismissed for an accidental collision with the keeper.  Immediately the home side broke away and HOWARTH netted a third. Dyllan Drovi came on for Mitchell.

The Cobbydalers were awarded a penalty with ten minutes to go. Joe JAGGER slotted it home  3-2!. The ten men of Silsden pushed forward, with Qasim causing panic in the home defence. Damba made two superb saves at the other end and Barnes blocked another effort as Silsden were stretched. Drovi rounded Handsworth’s left-back, got to the bye-line and cut the ball back inside. Handsworth managed to clear. A minute later there was the superb link-up play which saw Qasim round Hobson, on the edge of the area. Jagger was looking for a  through-ball to give him a one-on-one with the keeper, but the ball was fractionally behind him. The shot was blocked and the home side broke away and netted a fourth out of nothing, DUNNE being the scorer.

Manager, Danny Forrest`s views after the game, “I was pleased with the second-half performance where we showed fight and played good football, but you can’t start the way we did at this level. We gave ourselves too much to do”

Next Saturday the Cobbydalers entertain Eccleshill in the FA CUP extra-preliminary round.

HANDSWORTH FC: Townsend, Bell, Tootle (Eagle 64), Harrison, Hobson, Roebuck, Teasdale (Nyarko), Baldwin (Gascoigne 70), Howarth, Dunne, Oliver.

NEWS | Club Statement

Silsden AFC withdraw from the Yorkshire Trophy

Following on from the Prime Minister’s address on Monday as well as the latest guidelines from the DCMS and the FA we have withdrawn from the Yorkshire Trophy.

Whilst we are keen to return to playing football as soon as possible, we have to take on board advice and guidance from the government, the DCMS and the FA. We have always said our participation would be dependent on the return of fans and the ability to provide sales of food & drink.

We would like to thank Vill Powell, Brighouse Town and the other 10 clubs for their efforts in getting a tournament organised.

Ultimately the guidance, coupled with our plans for pitch maintenance work and the possibility of the Yorkshire Trophy running into pre-season has left us with no alternative but to withdraw.

We look forward to welcoming fans back to the Cobbydale Construction Stadium in the near future.

MATCH REPORT | AFC Mansfield 2-2 Silsden AFC

The Toolstation Northern Counties East Football League Premier Division 2020-2021

Saturday 26th December 2020

AFC MANSFIELD 2 – 2 SILSDEN AFC

AFC Mansfield Goalscorers: Josh Wilde 9 & Ross Duggan 15

Silsden AFC Goalscorers: Liam Hudson 10 & 63

Attendance: 150

HUDSON AT THE DOUBLE

Danny Forrest made two changes to the starting line up, Shaun Airey replacing Josh Kaine who was unavailable and Craig Billington replacing Mark Simpson who dropped to the bench.

AFC Mansfield boss Matt Chatfield made a few changes after the Bulls recent defeat to Hemsworth MWFC. The Bulls top scorer Ross Duggan lead the line once again, already with an impressive 16 goals in all competitions.

The opening minutes of the game belonged to the Bulls who dominated in the early minutes, the first chance of the game feel too Duggan but thanks to great defending by Airey and Barnes the chance ultimately came to nothing.

In the 9th minute AFC Mansfield opened the scoring, skipper Josh Wilde with a great strike from a tight angle leaving Kyle Welsh with little chance in the goal.

Silsden responded emphatically just a minute later, after a corner broke in the box for Liam Hudson the Sils man smashed the ball passed Warhust to bring the game level.

The Sils kept pushing for the lead, Craig Billington striking just over the bar. AFC Mansfield were quick to attack and in the 15th minute the Bulls lead once again. Ross Duggan with a low finish into the bottom corner.

Both teams continued to exchange attacks, but there would be no further goals in the first half.

Just before the break Forrest was forced into a change as Illingworth was unable to continue with Foley coming on to replace him.

Into the second half and Silsden started brightly with Hudson testing the keeper once again. Moments later Harry Parsons produced a great run down the left before cutting in, his shot was just about crowded out by the Bulls back line.

Mansfield threatened once again as they attacked down the wing, the ball in somehow evaded everyone in the middle and Silsden were able to clear the danger.

In the 60th minute Mark Simpson replaced Wademan upfront to partner Craig Billington.

Carlton Pownall proved a constant menace down the right side, a strong, mazy run winning the Sils a corner. From the resulting corner Billington and Simpson both had attemps blocked in a goal mouth scramble.

Simpson continued to threaten Warhurst’s goal, in the 63rd minute the keeper did well to save a low strike from the Sils substitute but could only parry into the path of Hudson who once again brought the Sils level.

Danny Forrest’s men continued to push forward with Billington and Simpson causing lots of problems for the hosts defence, Simpson broke and looked to be going through on goal before being clipped by the Bulls defender. The referee produced the first yellow card of the game.

AFC Mansfield came forward again but Duggan could only shoot over from a tight angle.

Craig Billington and Ross Killock were both booked after a clash in the box whilst the Sils defended a corner.

Silsden kept pushing for the winner, Billington seeing a shot saved from a tight angle before Mitchell almost dispossessed the keeper after a poor back pass.

In the 80th minute Simpson did well to beat his man in the box and deliver towards the near post, Billington challenged with the keeper and defender but somehow the ball stayed out.

Harry Thompson picked up another booking as he stopped a Bulls counter attack as the hosts threated Welsh’s goal.

Pownall with another driving run down the right this time his deep delivery to the back post just proved too strong for the on rushing Billington.

A great point on the road for the Sils against a strong AFC Mansfield team, lots of positives to take forward into the upcoming games. Silsden are back at the Cobbydale Construction Stadium next Saturday as we welcome Grimsby Borough.
