MATCH REPORT

An incredible end to an incredible NCEL season saw us run out 6-4 winners over Rossington Main at a sunny Oxford Street yesterday afternoon.

A 6-goal first half saw us come from behind on three separate occasions after goals from Dylan Mantle, Ollie Nowak and Ross Hannah were cancelled out by Harry Coates, Toby Jeffrey and Jake Maltby respectively.

In the second half we showed our champions quality as Mo Conteh and Robbie Fox added to the scoreline before a Brandon Murillo strike pulled the hosts to within a goal.

Luke Brooksbank popped up off the bench to round off a crazy afternoon in Doncaster, finishing 6-4 in the end.

A perfect day for football with the sun out in South Yorkshire, the lads begun the day receiving a guard of honour from our fabulous hosts at Rosso.

Within the opening 10 minutes Mantle swept the hosts into the lead as Nowak did well down the right before firing across goal for the loanee to finish.

That lead was short lived as from a corner the ball dropped out to stand-in skipper Coates who smashed home a half-volley from the edge of the area, a real strikers finish from the centre half.

Rosso’s number 11 Nowak was having a fine start to the game as we struggled to contain him, he added their second with a wonderful curled effort on 21 minutes.

Anything their number 11 can do ours can do better however as Jeffrey picked up the ball on the left flank before unleashing an unstoppable strike in off the crossbar to level the scores soon after.

The goalscoring exploits of Ross Hannah are no secret to anyone in the NCEL and the former Bantam’s striker popped up from a corner to make it 3-2 just after the half hour mark.

But the topsy turvy game continued, both sides seeming happy to forget about defending and put on a show for those in attendance, Jake Maltby shooting from 30 yards and the keeper losing sight of the ball in the sun before it nestled into the corner.

Halftime did little to slow the flow of the tie, a set-piece situation dropped to Mo Conteh who controlled wonderfully before smashing home a left-footed volley into the far corner.

It was five soon after the hour mark as a long ball found Fox who spotted the slip from the onrushing keeper and simply nodded home into the empty net.

Rosso Skipper Murillo added to the afternoon’s catalogue of screamers with a strike right into the top corner following a corner to make it 4-5.

Brooksbank rounded off what was possibly our game of the season (excluding Pickering of course😉) with a fine finish late on.

A great afternoon then and what a way to end our best ever campaign!

We still have a cup double to chase however and a semi-final to tackle on Tuesday as we head over to newly confirmed playoff side Beverley Town.
