Earlier this week we spoke to Chairman Will Twigg who gave us an insight into the role and how things are going at Silsden overall!
How are you finding the role so far?
I’m loving being Chairman, equally it’s really involved and takes up a lot of time. People underestimate how much it takes to run a semi-pro side, luckily for me we have a great committee, volunteers and management team to keep things moving!
How are things going off the pitch at the club?
There are always problems to solve, whether that be linked to the team or something at the ground. Everyone looks after their own little things and there’s usually someone on hand to fix something that’s broken. We continue to drive together and aim to strengthen the club as much as possible for future years.
How pleased are you with the progress on the pitch?
I’m over the moon at what’s happening on the pitch, the men’s team have a great team spirit and never say die attitude! Cav, Breezer, Harry and the whole management team have worked wonders and although it’s a long season, it’s great to sit back and see how far the team has come. Our ladies team is improving week on week too which is great to see.
What’s been your favourite game so far this season and why?
Difficult to pick a game after 9 wins on the bounce, I’d probably say Golcar at home. I said to Greaves before he went on that he was going to score the winner, and he did just that! We have left it late on a few too many occasions but those ones definitely rank up there with the best wins!
What’s your relationship like with Cav and how often do both of you communicate?
Everyone knows Cav and I have a strong relationship, as Chairman it’s critical our management team get the support they need to succeed, I can’t manage a team on his behalf but if we give them the tools to succeed we give them the best chance. We speak every day, multiple times, Cav has football in his blood and you won’t find a more committed manager in non-league than him.
Have you set any expectations between yourselves for the club?
The club never sets expectations as such, every club targets as a high a finish as possible, we’re no different. The attributes are there in the team to win our league, but it’s early days and there’s certainly no pressure.
What sort of relationship do you have with the players how often does a chairman communicate with the squad?
I have always been close to the playing squad, driving the bus to away games etc and attending training sessions probably strengthens that. I would never come in the way of Cav, he’s the manager and although I get on with the players he makes the decisions.
It’s a tough FA Vase draw at home to Ramsbottom United this Saturday, how excited are you for the game?
Ramsbottom are a great side, we’ve locked horns before when Silsden played in the NWCFL and it’ll be a tough test but winnable if we are on our game. I’ve seen Ramsbottom play 2/3 times this year and they’re a physical side with a number of players who have played at a much higher level.
Any more exciting news to share regarding the club?
The club continues to grow, our junior section is one of the biggest in the area but as a club we remain committed to investing in our facilities, team and pitches regardless of level or age. I am lucky to be part of a committee who has transformed the club from just a wood hut in the car park to what it is today, with new committee members and fresh blood coming in, we’re ensuring this will be part of the local community well into the future.
