MATCH REPORT
Silsden progressed in the NCEL League Cup last night with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Goole at the Regal Interiors Stadium.
Luke Brooksbank opened the scoring before an Ellis Hudson own goal brought the scores level, Cody Cromack then put us back ahead moments before the half time break.
Experienced striker Tom Greaves further added to the scoreline although Viking’s striker Alex Widdop’s goal did make for a nervy last quarter of an hour.
Our visitors created the first opportunity of the game after just two minutes, Liam Flanagan’s low shot well saved by the feet of Callum Bradbury.
However just eight minutes in, Brooksbank would strike home the opener after he was afforded the space to rifle into the bottom corner from outside the penalty area.
Nash Connolly looked threatening in the early exchanges and was unfortunate not to score on a number of occasions, with both defenders and keeper blocking his attempts.
Against the run of play, Goole would level on the half hour mark.
Flanagan’s low shot took a wicked deflection off the head of Hudson and found it’s way into the net, an own goal awarded to the former Bradford City man.
Viking’s stopper Logan Power was in fine first half form, denying Brooky his and Silsden’s second on a number of occasions.
Power was however powerless to stop Cromack from opening his Sils account and giving us the advantage on 45 minutes as his rasping drive took a deflection and found the corner of the net.
Greaves would grab the third on 53 minutes, keeping his composure on the edge of the box to take a smart touch and unleashing a powerful strike that Power was just unable to keep out.
Goole found a lifeline through Widdop on 76 minutes, who after some scuffed clearances found himself with space inside the box to fire a thunderous effort into the roof of the net.
Despite the late pressure, we would hold on and secure our passage through to the third round of the League Cup.
